There is a phrase, “It takes a village to raise a child” which means there are many different resources from many different needed to help a child fully develop.
In one issue of the Daily Om that I read recently, the author talked about the value of being able to be our own village – of being willing to access the many resources we have at our disposal – both internally and externally – to help ourselves in any given situation.
As I read on, with the author affirming the value of being able to ask others for help, there was also drawing attention to the merit of being self-sufficient. They pointed out that our society today encourages specialization – becoming an expert in some particular field – but how that can be a limitation as well, because while we are focusing all our energy on developing one particular skill, we sacrifice the ability to develop many other skills and lose some of our self-reliance.
I was immediately reminded of a client who once said to me after experiencing a healing Shin Dao session with me, “You are amazing! You are like a library of resources that people can access. You know about so many different things that can help us to help ourselves.”
Our ‘specialization/become an expert’ focused society had made me feel like my Aries “jack of all trades” tendency was a ‘bad’ thing, but in one simple statement of appreciation, this client turned that around 180 degrees for me.
My varied interests and willingness to learn a plethora of different things is actually a wonderful asset for me – for being able to be my own village, when necessary – and for my clients who get to benefit from all the research, knowledge, information and wisdom I have amassed.
Growing up, my mom taught me to be independent, and that has served me well. Yet my years of experience in the healing field have taught me that as human beings we are INTER-dependant… we need each other in different ways for different things.
And it’s nice to know that we can get by on our own when there isn’t anyone else available to ask in the moment.
